Radical Cup North America returns to action this weekend as the championship heads to Sonoma Raceway for the second event weekend of the 2026 season, with a 21-car field set to tackle the next three races of the year in Northern California. Following a wild and weather-affected opening round at Sebring International Raceway, the trip west offers a new challenge and another chance for early contenders to strengthen their grip on the championship fight.

At Sebring, several drivers wasted no time making their intentions known. Robert Rossi earned two wins in Platinum before Scott Wagner captured the final race of the weekend. Jonas Axboe and Ryan Persing split the early spotlight in Pro 1500, with Persing earning his first career series victory before Axboe stormed back to claim both Sunday wins. In Gold, Chris Huhn was flawless with a three-race sweep, as Mike D’Ambrose matched that effort in Pro 1340 to open the season in dominant fashion, while young guns led by Decklan Deonarine impressed.

Now, with Sonoma’s technical layout and massive elevation changes, the next chapter of the championship is set to unfold.

Platinum Class – Rossi Looks to Keep Momentum Rolling

The Platinum class brings a compact but potent field to Sonoma, with Chip Romer, Wayne Williams, and Robert Rossi all entered for the weekend. Returning to the series after a significant hiatus, Rossi was the class benchmark at Sebring, scoring two wins and immediately establishing himself as a title contender, but Sonoma presents an opportunity for reigning champ Williams and former SCCA Runoffs winner Romer to reset and strike back. Williams showed pace throughout the Sebring weekend, while Romer remains one of the category’s proven front-runners and will be looking for a cleaner path to the podium in California.

Pro 1500 – Again a Proving Ground for Future Talent

The largest class of the weekend will once again be Pro 1500, where nine drivers are entered, and no shortage of storylines. Axboe arrives with tremendous momentum after bouncing back from Race 1 trouble at Sebring to win both Sunday races, but the road to another perfect weekend will be anything but easy.

Persing already has a win to his name this season and will be determined to return to the top step of the podium, while Matt Romer and Jack Yang each showed strong pace in Florida and remain firmly in the mix. Look out for California natives Sam McDougall and Valen Venkatesh to use their home track knowledge and expect young-guns Luke Kendall and Josh Holtz to build upon their Sebring starts to ensure this stacked class produces the closest racing of the weekend.

Gold Class – Can Anyone Stop Huhn?

After the opening round, the question in Gold is simple: who can beat Chris Huhn? The Primal Motorsports driver was nearly untouchable at Sebring, sweeping all three races and frequently running at a pace that rivaled or exceeded some of the Pro 1500 competition. His performance put the paddock on notice and positioned him as the early favorite heading into Sonoma.

However, this weekend he’ll have locals Joe Nuxoll and Richard McDougall looking for success. The pair have countless laps at Sonoma, and the weekend will be extra special for McDougall, who will race alongside son Sam for the first time.

Title hopefuls Dennis Kelly and David Mason were both consistently on the podium at Sebring and both will be wanting their first wins, but with the additional depth this weekend, any trophies will be hard earned.

Pro 1340 – D’Ambrose’s Absence Opens the Door for Deonarine

All eyes were on points leader Mike D’Ambrose after his commanding sweep at Sebring, but the Team Stradale driver is unable to take part this weekend. Thus, the points standings will dramatically change after the weekend and will thrust young Canadian star Decklan Deonarine well and truly into the spotlight.

However, with only three Radical Cup starts to his name, Deonarine must hone his craft to capitalize in California. Looking to stop him will be Evan Wolf, who is also in for a championship campaign, while Crown with Radical Arizona lists a third TBA entry that could add another variable to the class battle. In any case, Sonoma offers the perfect opportunity for rivals to chip away at D’Ambrose’s early championship edge.

A New Track, A New Test

Sebring delivered rain, red flags, recovery drives, and breakthrough performances, but Sonoma promises a different kind of challenge. The famed Wine Country road course rewards rhythm, patience, and precision, and that change in scenery could lead to another shakeup across the championship standings.

With 21 cars entered and championship momentum already on the line, Radical Cup North America’s second stop of the season is set to deliver another exciting weekend of class battles, emerging talent, and high-level prototype racing. Be sure to tune to the livestream for qualifying and all three races.
