The Nürburgring is a track indelibly linked with the Radical brand, but more specifically, the famous Nordschleife. In 2009 Michael Verges famously broke the Bridge-To-Gantry record for roadgoing cars, logging an incredible 6:48 in a Radical SR8 LM that he had driven from England in the day before. The record would stand for 12 years.
Now firmly focussed on track-only racing cars, Radical’s return to the Nürburgring is on the iconic Grand Prix circuit, home to
Reigning Radical Cup UK champion, Brit Marcus Littlewood (RSR), arrives as the championship leader, holding a 49-point lead over the Danish pairing of Sebastian Schou and Morten Strømsted (STEP Motorsport), themselves past Radical Cup Scandinavia champions. The pair are 17-points clear of Radical Norway’s Erlend Juan Olsen, making for a truly international heading.
Radical stalwart John Macleod arrives as the leader of the Fangio Class, for drivers aged over 50. His nearest Fangio contender in the Radical Cup UK and outright race winner at the last round at Paul Ricard, Andy Lowe, is sitting this round out, giving Macleod valuble breathing space. He’ll need to watch his mirrors, however, as Jahid Fazal-Karim will be waiting to pounce.
Paul Denning (RSR) makes a welcome return to the series, after missing the Paul Ricard round due to a scheduling conflict. The Brit’s day job as Team Principle of Yamaha’s factory World Superbike team takes understandable priority, but now back in the world of four wheels, Denning will be looking to make inroads on the Fangio Trophy.
RJ Motorsport’s Brian Huang is making a dual European/North American campaign this year, with an appearance most recently at Oulton Park for the Radical Cup UK.
Peter Gustafson and Filip Svensson will again be representing Radical Sweden in the sole Radical SR10 on the grid this weekend. The turbocharged weapon is a popular choice at the front of North American grids but rarer on this side of the Atlantic, and makes an interesting point of comparison to the smaller-engined Radical SR3s.
The revival of Radical racing on the Continent has been a long time coming, and the Radical Cup Europe is proving highly popular with competitors and spectators alike.
All qualifying and races will be streamed live from Paul Ricard on the Creventic Motorsports TV YouTube channel, with live on boards from every session courtesy of Race Streaming, and event coverage on Instagram @radical_cup_europe
