The Radical Cup North America is set for its first event of 2025 this weekend at Sebring International Raceway. Nearly 30 Radical racers, representing four nationalities and including seven rookies and multiple former champs, will kick off their season and quest for glory in Central Florida.
“It is always exciting to start a new season, and one that looks more interesting than years past,” explained Radical Motorsports Tom Drewer. “We have new teams and new drivers in 2025, but also some stalwarts that will make the upcoming season fascinating. With 18 different teams and drivers from the USA, Canada, China, and Puerto Rico, can a young gun earn a title, or will veterans reign supreme? Stick with us all season long to find out.”
With 28 entries confirmed, equally scattered amongst the three Radical Cup North America classes, ten drivers will see action in Pro 1340 and Platinum, while eight drivers will do battle in Pro 1500.
In the Platinum ranks, a handful of returning drivers will aim for the title, including former SCCA Runoffs winner Chip Romer and his new teammate, Canadian Wayne Williams driving an SR10 XXR. Williams has already reported making strong gains after switching to One Motorsports for his 2025 campaign and will be hoping his third year in the series ends with a championship. The rebranded JBR team will have three drivers in the Platinum class with Scott Wagner, perennial frontrunner and former Pro 1340 champ Louis Schriber, and veteran David Alban. Team Stradale is fielding entries for 2024 race winner and journeyman Michai Stephens alongside Ben Blander, who has stepped up to SR10 machinery after a number of campaigns in the Pro 1340 ranks. Jason Greenwood is working out of the G-Tech Motorsports camp and is confirmed for a partial season, while Group-A Racing returns with Steve Jenks and Drew Altman both with brand new cars. All Platinum class drivers will pilot the SR10 XXR machines, less Stephens and Greenwood, who will be behind the wheel of the prior specification SR10 machines.
Pro 1500 will once again be stacked with the competition, with multi-time 2024 podium winner Spencer Schmidt, son of racing icon Sam Schmidt, joining the Graham Rahal Performance outfit for his sophomore season to become an instant championship contender. His biggest threat comes from Radien Nicol of Primal Racing, who wowed the Radical Cup paddock in his one-off debut at Barber last year. 2024 Road America race winner Jack Yang will be another to watch as he makes his debut with English team Valour, as it looks to repeat its successes in the Radical Cup UK and U.A.E.’s Gulf Radical Cup. RYNO Racing’s Mike Anzaldi can’t be counted out– the series stalwart likely has more laps behind the wheel of a Radical than any other driver this weekend – nor can 2021 class champion Gustavo Rafols, who makes his Radical Cup return with LC Racing. 2023 Pro 1340 Champion Austin Riley will start his second season in Pro 1500 campaigning with Racing with Autism. Radical Northwest with Cameron Racing will be defending their class Team Championship with Ryan Persing, younger brother of 2023 Pro 1500 champion Nick Persing, alongside Valen Venkatesh, sibling of series regular Arul Venkatesh.
Crown Concepts with Apex Racing will once again be a force in Pro 1340 as they enter four of the ten drivers in Sebring. The father and son duo of Jace and Seth Bacon will be joined by rookies Andy Voelkel and Mike Dardin. Kenny Naill will be back for year two with Graham Rahal Performance while female driver Aurora Straus makes her return to the series with Primal Racing promoting their joint venture with P1 Motor Club. Team Stradale will see Mike D’Ambrose pilot their Pro 1340 entry. Three Canadians will also offer strong competition in Pro 1340 – Cedric Ohayon, Brady Clapham, Dermot Ennis, who are running with Radical Canada East, RySpec Racing, and Ennis Racing respectively.
Drewer continued, “Following this strong start to the season at Sebring, we’re on track for sell-out grids alongside INDYCAR for Barber, Road America, and Laguna Seca, and lots of locals for our final two events at the iconic Road Atlanta and Lime Rock Park venues. It is going to be an exciting season!”
