John MacLeod breaks his own record as he wins the Birkett Six-Hour Relay for the seventh time

The 750 Motor Club Birkett Relay is the UK’s largest annual motor race. It has been running for 73 years and attracts 70 teams and 300 drivers each year. Going up against such a large field of competition makes Radical and RSR’s success in the competition extra special.

The line up of John MacLeod, Joe Stables, and James Pinkerton, known as the 3 J’s secured a hard-fought win against fierce competition. Team RSR were the team to beat in their Radicals as they raced around the Silverstone GP Circuit to secure victory in the 2025 event, with John and James competing in a SR3 XXR and Joe in a PR6.

John has now achieved four-consecutive wins, with him now breaking his own record of six wins with a seventh. This means he is still the Birkett’s most successful driver in its 75-year history. We asked him what he put that down to: “I’ve run in the Birkett nine times, always in various iterations of the SR3, alongside team-mates racing in various generations and models of Radicals”.

He goes on to say that “the Radicals have always been reliable and consistent, and are absolutely the right tool for the job – doing well in the Birkett is about navigating your way through the incredible traffic created by 70 teams being on track, almost all of which are running non-aero machinery about 30s-45s a lap slower.”

The high closing speeds to these groups of racers, who are all focused on their own race means you need an agile and predictable car that responds well to whatever surprises are going to come your way…and that is exactly what makes the Radical stand out. John says “it’s what also makes the Birkett so appealing, and such a challenge – it’s great to be out there with machinery varying from NASCAR to Suzuki Swifts to BMW 325s”.

“In 2025, after six hours of wet and dry running, multiple Safety Cars and a total of 143 laps covered, and a last-minute dash to get my car out due to the PR6 stopping on track with 13-minutes left, we won by 76 seconds after – if that’s not a reason to go again next year I don’t know what is.”

John finishes by saying “you need a car that works with you and responds in a predictable way at all times over the duration of the race. Radicals are reliable, and consistent, and are absolutely the right tool for the job”.

Two-time 750 Motor Club Bikesports (now Radical Club Challenge) winner Joe Stables set the Fastest Lap of the event with a time of 02:06.828, achieving an average speed of 104mph.

Radicals have been a dominate force in the Birkett Relay since the early 2000s and have provided fierce competition to their rivals, and they can be proud of the show they put on.

Congratulations to John, Joe and James again on their well earnt victory, and we are pleased that they have done so well in their Radicals, adding to our successful legacy in the Birkett Relay.
