After ten years of racing Radical sportscars, American Indy Al Miller has reached the top of the podium in Portimao, Portugal and can now be defined as a World Champion. Representing the United States of America on the Radical Motorsport world stage this past weekend, the Indiana native was crowned the Platinum class Radical World Champion, turning his pole position into a championship win in a one–three finish for American competitors.
Taking place at the famous Portimao, Portugal circuit Autodromo Do Algarve this year, the annual Radical World Finals attracts Radical Motorsport drivers from around the world to compete for the lucrative World Championship title. American competitor Al Miller, coined “Indy Al Miller” due to growing up in Indianapolis and dreaming of one day becoming a race car driver, was hoping the second time was the charm after nearly clinching the Platinum class World Championship title at the 2022 Radical World Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada last year.
Claiming third in heat race one of the weekend was just a tiny indication of what was to come. In heat race two, Miller had an unlucky start to his race but kept his #500 SR10 XXR Radical within the top-five. His fastest lap in race two relegated the American to pole position for heat race three, which he turned into his first-weekend win.
“I started on the pole position for race three,” explained Miller. “After the first lap, I was 16 seconds ahead. Halfway through the race, I had a rear tire go flat, and it went completely dead. I didn’t think I would finish the race, but I managed to pace myself and pull out the win. Hopefully, we can do it again in the World Final race this afternoon.”
Starting from second for the fourth and final race of the weekend, the Radical World Final, Miller was eager to keep the winning streak alive. Piloting his newly branded SR10 XXR across this finish line unchallenged, Indy Al Miller was named the 2023 Platinum class Radical World Champion.
An emotional Miller added, “This is a lifelong dream. I’ve been racing Radicals for ten years, and I’m finally a World Champion. I can’t thank my wife, Danyelle, enough for the support. Tom Gladdis, you are an amazing driver coach; thank you. I am just speechless. This has been an amazing weekend and thank you to my friends and family for all the support.”
