Korea: Largest ever grid of Radicals in East Asia take on Inje Speedium for Radical Cup Korea’s third round

Radical Cup Korea visited the Inje Speedium Circuit for round three of its 2021 championship over the weekend of September 4-5, with a record number of 14 Radicals making for the largest ever grid of the Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, built sports racing cars ever seen in East Asia.

Radical Sportscars’ global dealer network runs racing championships all over the world, and Radical Cup Korea is supported by Radical’s 2020 Dealer of the Year, MotorKlasse. The championship is on the bill of the CJ Superrace series, which is Korea’s largest motorsport championship, with organisation by URO Motor Sports.

Round three of Radical Cup Korea, held at the 3.9km Inje Speedium circuit, which is located 120km East of Seoul, consisted of two free practice sessions and a qualifying session on Saturday, and a warm-up and 15-lap race on Sunday.

Radical Cup Korea runs classes for the Radical SR3 and SR1, with the faster SR8 and SR10 models eligible but with a pit lane drive-through handicap taken during the race.

In qualifying for the SR3 class, ex-European Le Mans Series driver Tacksung Kim took pole position with a 1.35.721 in his number 55 Radical SR8. He managed to hold onto this lead ahead of John Kwon (SR10), Randy Choi (SR3 XX), and Taeyang (SR10).

In the SR1 class, it was the number 87 car of Hyunjun Kim who started from the front row, setting a 1.42.786 lap time. It was no easy victory for Hyunjun, with Don Kim hot on his heels for the entire race duration but unable to find a way through.

Radical Cup Korea saw one of the most diverse fields spanning the Radical SR-series range, with the SR1, SR3, the screaming naturally aspirated V8-powered SR8, and three examples of the turbocharged SR10 all represented on the grid. Epitomising Radical’s ‘Race The World’ concept, where owners are connected to a global network of Radical enthusiasts and race teams which enables them to experience tracks all around the world, the entry list included visiting drivers from Singapore, Taiwan, and the USA.

The pandemic continues to affect the region, but as the situation improves in the coming months, Radical Cup Korea are expecting grids topping 20 cars at its later rounds.

The five-round series next visits Seoul’s Everland Speedway on November 7, with the final round scheduled at Yeongam’s Korea International Circuit, past host of the Korean Grand Prix, on November 21.

There will be a further opportunity for Radical owners to experience the Korea International Circuit’s short course, when MotorKlasse joins Jeonnam-GT for an endurance race weekend on October 23-24.
